As a Senior Brand Designer on Shopify’s Growth team, I led the design of the refreshed Business Name Generator experience. I focused on improving usability, visual appeal, and overall brand coherence. My process began with mapping key friction points from the previous version and identifying opportunities to make the flow more intuitive. I worked closely with the content team to refine tone and messaging, ensuring every interaction felt supportive and clear. The visual direction was designed to feel fresh, light, and motivating—aligning with Shopify’s brand while giving the tool its own creative energy.
A seamless experience for discovering names
The redesigned Business Name Generator offered a fast, intuitive way for entrepreneurs to explore potential names. Clean layouts, dynamic typography, and contextual suggestions helped maintain focus and momentum. Subtle interaction patterns—like live previews and search feedback—kept people engaged. The experience was intentionally simple: minimal friction, maximum clarity, and a sense of possibility at every step.

Following the redesign, the Business Name Generator saw significant improvements in engagement and conversion. It also propelled Shopify back to the number one organic search position for “business name generator,” strengthening Shopify’s visibility among new entrepreneurs. The project turned a simple utility into a strategic growth channel—one that continues to bring people into the Shopify ecosystem through an inspiring, confidence-building first experience.
